Hyper-acidity/ GERD

( Please also see pages on Cholesterol & Clogged arteries )

I had hyper acidity problem from my childhood. Stomach pain was a constant complaint and I lived with it. Occasionally taking herbal  antacid powders helped.
Once I was in twenties and started  working,  the problem of acidity became more acute. I am a vegetarian and ate regular Indian dishes. I had to take antacid tablets on regular basis. At times I had to take pain killer Baralgan .
When I was 52 I had chest pain at night.  Cardiac check up    was found normal. Since I had this chest pain while sleeping I was advised to get an endoscopy  done.It was found  that I had Hiatus Hernia. One tablet of  Zentac 150mg at bed time was prescribed and I was comfortable with it. During the day I took antacid tablets on need basis. A few years later I was advised by the doctor to take acid blockers. I was taking 10mg dose. At the age of 66 I had acute pain in esophagus.. Endoscopy showed that I had Barrets Esophagitis . I was advised to take acid blocker Pentacid 40mg twice in day and 4 teaspoons of Reflux Liquid after every meal for 3 months. After completing the course I was advised to take one Pentacid 40 mg every day.. When I was 79,  I developed constant pain in lower abdomen. Several ultrasounds done were found normal. Fifteen day`s ayurvedic treatment ( colon cleansing called `Basti`) cured me of pain but I continued taking Pentacid 40mg every day.
Later I got a Body Scan done in Mumbai  at DG Clinic (http://www.drjaswant.com ) and it was found that I had chronic inflammation of Colon. It was attributed to use of acid blockers. I discontinued acid blocker immediately and switched to more alkaline food to control acidity naturally. I no longer suffer from hyper acidity.

Although it might seem that citrus fruits would have an acidifying effect on the body, the citric acid they contain actually has an alkalinizing effect in the system.

Note that a food’s acid or alkaline forming tendency in the body has nothing to do with the actual pH of the food itself. For example, lemons are very acidic, however the end products they produce after digestion and assimilation are very alkaline so, lemons are alkaline forming in the body. Likewise, meat will test alkaline before digestion, but it leaves very acidic residue in the body so, like nearly all animal products, meat is very acid forming.
